9 Tricks to Memorize Multiplication Tables Fast

Memorizing multiplication tables doesn't have to be painful. These research-backed tricks make it easier—and even fun.

Why Memorization Matters

While understanding is crucial, fluent recall of multiplication facts is essential for:

  • Mental math speed
  • Long division
  • Fraction operations
  • Algebra readiness

  • Children who don't know their facts automatically struggle with higher math because their working memory is overloaded.

    The Strategic Order

Don't memorize 1-12 in order. This sequence is proven more effective:

  • **×2** — Doubles (most children already know)
  • **×10** — Just add a zero
  • **×5** — Count by 5s
  • **×1** — Same number
  • **×0** — Always zero
  • **×11** — Repeat the digit (up to 9)
  • **×9** — See the trick below!
  • **×3** — Count by 3s
  • **×4** — Double the double
  • **×6, 7, 8, 12** — Use known facts

  • 9 Powerful Tricks

    1. The 9s Finger Trick

Hold up both hands. For 9×N, put down finger N from the left.

  • Fingers LEFT of the down finger = tens digit
  • Fingers RIGHT of the down finger = ones digit

  • Example: 9×7 — Put down finger 7. See 6 fingers left, 3 right. Answer: 63!

    2. The 9s Digital Root

All products of 9 have digits that sum to 9:

  • 9×2=18 (1+8=9)
  • 9×7=63 (6+3=9)

  • 3. Double-Double for 4s

4× anything = double it, then double again

  • 4×7 = 7→14→28

  • 4. Half-Then-10 for 5s

    5× anything = half of 10×

  • 5×8 = half of 80 = 40

  • 5. Use Commutative Property

If you know 7×3, you know 3×7! This cuts the facts in half.

    6. Near-Facts Strategy

For hard facts, use easier facts:

  • 6×8 = 6×10 - 6×2 = 60-12 = 48
  • 7×8 = 8×8 - 8 = 64-8 = 56

  • 7. Rhymes and Songs

    Memory hooks stick:

  • "6×8 went on a date, came home at 48"
  • "7×7 went to heaven, came back 49"

  • 8. Skip Counting Patterns

Practice counting by 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s aloud. The rhythm builds memory.

    9. The Multiplication Table Patterns

  • Look at the diagonals—they form patterns!
  • Even × even = even
  • Odd × odd = odd
  • Square numbers appear on the diagonal

  • Practice for Fluency

After learning tricks, practice for speed:

  • Flashcards (3-5 minute sessions)
  • Timed worksheets
  • Multiplication games
  • Online practice apps

  • Aim for instant recall (under 3 seconds per fact).
