What 4th Grade math looks like, solved step by step

Real 4th Grade problems, one per topic, from multi-digit multiplication to roman numerals — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.

Multi-digit Multiplication

Estimate 209 × 4 by rounding 209 to the nearest hundred. What is your estimate?

  1. Round 209 to the nearest hundred: 209 → 200 (the tens digit is 0, so round down).
  2. Multiply the rounded numbers. 200 × 4: multiply 2 × 4 = 8, then put back the 2 zeros: 800.
  3. So the estimate is about 800.

Answer: 800

Decimals

Rosa ran 8.5 km on Saturday and 5.7 km on Sunday. How many more kilometers did Rosa run on Saturday?

  1. The question compares two amounts ("how many more"), so subtract the smaller from the larger.
  2. Line up the decimal points: 8.5 − 5.7. Think in tenths: 85 − 57 = 28 tenths, which is 2.8.
  3. So the answer is 2.8 kilometers.

Measurement

Find the area of a rectangle 6 units by 7 units.

  1. Area is the number of unit squares inside the rectangle: 7 rows of 6 squares.
  2. Multiply length × width: 6 × 7 = 42.
  3. The area is 42 square units.

Roman Numerals

What number is CXXVIII?

  1. Split CXXVIII into place-value groups: C | XX | VIII.
  2. C = 100, XX = 20 (10 + 10), VIII = 8 (5 + 1 + 1 + 1).
  3. Add the groups: 100 + 20 + 8 = 128.
  4. So CXXVIII = 128.

Answer: 128
