Geometry

Elementary geometry progresses from identifying basic shapes (K-1st) to classifying shapes by attributes (2nd-3rd), understanding area and perimeter (3rd-4th), working with angles and symmetry (4th), coordinate graphing (5th), and surface area and volume (6th). Hands-on exploration with physical shapes is essential.

Geometry is naturally visual and hands-on. Build with blocks, go on shape hunts around the house, create art with geometric patterns, use tangrams and pattern blocks, measure rooms for area/perimeter, and explore symmetry in nature. These activities make abstract concepts concrete and engaging.

Geometry develops spatial reasoning, which is crucial for math, science, engineering, and everyday tasks like reading maps, packing, and building. Research shows that strong spatial skills predict success in STEM fields. Early geometry also reinforces measurement, fractions, and algebraic thinking.
