Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) are learning goals outlining what students should know at each grade level. The standards emphasize conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application—teaching students not just how to calculate, but why math procedures work.

Common Core methods make thinking visible by showing intermediate steps that adults typically do mentally. Strategies like "making ten" or "decomposing numbers" build number sense and mental math flexibility. The methods may look unfamiliar but develop stronger mathematical thinking.

As of 2025, most U.S. states have adopted Common Core or closely aligned standards. Some states have modified or rebranded them while maintaining the core mathematical practices. Even states without official adoption often use textbooks aligned with similar principles.

Ask your child to explain their method to you rather than teaching your own approach, which may cause confusion. Many schools provide parent resources explaining grade-level strategies. Focus on understanding the reasoning behind the method rather than memorizing procedures.
