Example 1
What fraction is shaded?
- The shape is cut into 2 equal parts, so the denominator (bottom number) is 2.
- 1 of the 2 parts is shaded, so the numerator (top number) is 1.
- 1 shaded out of 2 equal parts is 1/2.
Answer: 1/2
Example 2
2/2 ___ 3/3
- 2/2 is all 2 of its 2 equal parts, so it is one whole.
- 3/3 is all 3 of its 3 equal parts, so it is one whole too. Both are one whole, so they are equal.
- So 2/2 = 3/3.
Answer: =
Example 3
2/4 − 1/4 = ?
- The denominators are the same (4), so the pieces are the same size.
- Subtract the numerators and keep the denominator: 2 − 1 = 1, so the difference is 1/4.
- So 2/4 − 1/4 = 1/4.
Answer: 1/4
