    1. Draw one bar for all of Lisa's books, split into two parts: 289 red and 465 blue.
    2. We know both parts and want the whole, so add the parts. 289 + 465: add the hundreds and tens, then the ones. 289 + 460 = 749, then 749 + 5 = 754.
    3. Lisa has 754 books in all.

    Answer: 754

    Lisa puts 15 books into bags. Each bag holds 3 books. How many bags does Lisa fill?

    1. Draw one bar for all 15 books. Each bag is a piece of 3.
    2. How many pieces of 3 fit into 15? Divide. 15 ÷ 3 = 5, because 3 × 5 = 15.
    3. Lisa fills 5 bags.

    Answer: 5

  3. Example 3

    Jack had 23 stickers. Jack got 5 more. How many stickers does Jack have now?

    1. Jack starts with 23 stickers. Getting 5 more makes the bar longer, so add.
    2. 23 + 5 = 28.
    3. Jack has 28 stickers now.

    Answer: 28
