1. Example 1

   Tom had 28 apples. Tom gave away 12. How many apples does Tom have now?

   1. Tom starts with 28 apples. Giving away 12 takes a piece off the bar, so subtract.
   2. 28 − 12: take away the tens, then the ones. 28 − 10 = 18, then 18 − 2 = 16.
   3. Tom has 16 apples now.

   Answer: 16

2. Example 2

   Jack had 23 stickers. Jack got 5 more. How many stickers does Jack have now?

   1. Jack starts with 23 stickers. Getting 5 more makes the bar longer, so add.
   2. 23 + 5 = 28.
   3. Jack has 28 stickers now.

   Answer: 28

3. Example 3

   Amy had 28 books. Amy gave away 3. How many books does Amy have now?

   1. Amy starts with 28 books. Giving away 3 takes a piece off the bar, so subtract.
   2. 28 − 3 = 25.
   3. Amy has 25 books now.

   Answer: 25
