Singapore Math

Singapore Math is a teaching approach developed in Singapore that uses a concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) progression. Students first use physical objects, then visual models like bar diagrams and number bonds, before moving to abstract equations. This builds deep conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.

Singapore Math can be started as early as kindergarten (age 5). The CPA approach is especially effective in early grades (K-3) when children are building foundational number sense. However, older students can also benefit from Singapore Math strategies for problem-solving.

Singapore consistently ranks among the top countries in international math assessments (TIMSS, PISA). The methodology develops stronger problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding compared to purely procedural approaches. Many U.S. schools and homeschool families have adopted it with excellent results.

Bar models (also called tape diagrams) are rectangular bars used to visually represent quantities in word problems. They help students see relationships between known and unknown values, making complex problems easier to solve without relying on keyword strategies.
