  1. Example 1

    Lisa has 72 crayons. 3/8 of them are red and the rest are blue. How many more blue crayons than red crayons are there?

    1. Cut the bar for all 72 crayons into 8 equal units: 1 unit = 72 ÷ 8 = 9.
    2. Red is 3 units and blue is the rest: 8 − 3 = 5 units.
    3. Blue has 5 − 3 = 2 more units than red: 2 × 9 = 18.
    4. There are 18 more blue crayons than red crayons.

    Answer: 18

  2. Example 2

    Tom has 22 cookies. Lisa has 24 cookies. Tom gives 5 to Lisa. How many cookies do they have altogether now?

    1. Draw a bar for Tom (22) and a bar for Lisa (24). When Tom gives 5 to Lisa, Tom's bar gets 5 shorter and Lisa's bar gets 5 longer.
    2. After the gift: Tom has 22 − 5 = 17 and Lisa has 24 + 5 = 29.
    3. Put the two bars together. 17 + 29: add the tens, then the ones. 17 + 20 = 37, then 37 + 9 = 46.
    4. Shortcut: the cookies only moved from one person to the other, so the total is the same as before: 22 + 24 = 46.
    5. They have 46 cookies altogether now.

    Answer: 46

  3. Example 3

    Lisa has 70 stickers. Max has 6 times as many stickers as Lisa. How many stickers do they have altogether?

    1. Draw Lisa's bar as 1 unit of 70 and Max's bar as 6 units of 70.
    2. Step 1: find Max's amount. 6 × 70 = 420.
    3. Step 2: put both bars together. 70 + 420 = 490.
    4. Check: that is 7 units of 70, and 7 × 70 = 490.
    5. They have 490 stickers altogether.

    Answer: 490
