    Sam has 12 red balloons and 12 blue balloons. How many balloons does Sam have in all?

    1. Draw one bar for all of Sam's balloons, split into two parts: 12 red and 12 blue.
    2. We know both parts and want the whole, so add the parts. 12 + 12: add the tens, then the ones. 12 + 10 = 22, then 22 + 2 = 24.
    3. Sam has 24 balloons in all.

    Answer: 24

    Mia has 8 books. Amy has 7 more than Mia. How many does Amy have?

    1. Draw Mia's bar for 8. Amy has 7 more, so Amy's bar is the same length plus an extra piece of 7.
    2. Add the extra piece to Mia's amount. 8 + 7 = 15.
    3. Amy has 15 books.

    Answer: 15

  3. Example 3

    Amy has 27 marbles. Tom has 7 more than Amy. How many does Tom have?

    1. Draw Amy's bar for 27. Tom has 7 more, so Tom's bar is the same length plus an extra piece of 7.
    2. Add the extra piece to Amy's amount. 27 + 7: make a ten first. 27 + 3 = 30, then 30 + 4 = 34.
    3. Tom has 34 marbles.

    Answer: 34
