How to solve Grade 2 measurement problems
Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.
Example 1
How many inches long is the feather?
- The left end of the feather lines up with the 0 mark.
- The right end lines up with the 5-inch mark.
- It starts at 0, so the number at the right end is the length: the feather is 5 inches long.
Answer: 5
Example 2
The belt is 27 inches long. The snake is 14 inches long. How many inches shorter is the snake than the belt?
- The belt is 27 inches and the snake is 14 inches.
- To find how much shorter, subtract the smaller length from the bigger one: 27 − 14 = 13.
- The snake is 13 inches shorter than the belt.
Answer: 13
Example 3
What time is shown on the clock?
- The short hour hand is between the 1 and the 2. It has passed the 1 but not the 2 yet, so the hour is still 1.
- The long minute hand points to the 9. Count by 5s for each number: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45. That is 45 minutes (quarter to the next hour).
- Hour 1 and 45 minutes: the time is 1:45.
Answer: 1:45
