How many inches long is the paper clip?
- The left end of the paper clip lines up with the 1-inch mark.

Example 2
What time is shown on the clock?
- The short hour hand is between the 1 and the 2. It has passed the 1 but not the 2 yet, so the hour is still 1.

- Hour 1 and 45 minutes: the time is 1:45.
Answer: 1:45
