What time is shown on the clock?

    1. The short hour hand is between the 7 and the 8. It has passed the 7 but not the 8 yet, so the hour is still 7.
    2. The long minute hand is 2 small marks past the 5. Count by 5s to the 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. Then count on 2 more by ones: 25 + 2 = 27 minutes.
    3. Hour 7 and 27 minutes: the time is 7:27.

    Answer: 7:27

  2. Example 2

Would you measure the mass of a leaf in grams or kilograms?

    1. Grams are for light things (a paper clip is about 1 gram). Kilograms are for heavy things (a big bottle of water is about 1 kilogram).
    2. A leaf is light, so use grams.
    3. The answer is grams.

    Answer: grams

  3. Example 3

A tank holds 48 liters of water. Then 36 liters leak out. How many liters of water are left?

    1. Water leaking out is taken away: subtract.
    2. 48 − 36 = 12.
    3. There are 12 liters of water left.

    Answer: 12
