How to solve Grade 3 division problems

Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.

  1. Example 1

    36 ÷ 6 = ?

    1. Divide 36 into 6 equal groups.
    2. Think: 6 × ? = 36
    3. 6 × 6 = 36
    4. So 36 ÷ 6 = 6

    Answer: 6

  2. Example 2

16 stickers are shared equally among 2 friends. How many stickers does each friend get?

    1. 16 are shared equally into 2 groups, and we want how many are in each group. Sharing equally is division: 16 ÷ 2.
    2. 16 ÷ 2 = 8, because 2 × 8 = 16.
    3. So the answer is 8 stickers each.

    Answer: 8

  3. Example 3

A teacher has 39 markers. She puts 3 markers in each cup. How many cups does she fill?

    1. We know the total (39) and how many fit in one group (3), and we want how many groups. That is division: 39 ÷ 3.
    2. 39 ÷ 3: take away 3 × 10 = 30 (9 left), 3 × 3 = 9 (0 left). 10 + 3 = 13, so 39 ÷ 3 = 13.
    3. So the answer is 13 cups.

    Answer: 13
