How to solve Grade 6 fractions problems
Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.
Example 1
Simplify the complex fraction (7/8) / (5/12)
- A complex fraction has a fraction in its numerator or denominator. Its main fraction bar means divide: (7/8) / (5/12) = 7/8 ÷ 5/12.
- Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second: 5/12 becomes 12/5.
- 7/8 ÷ 5/12 = 7/8 × 12/5.
- Multiply the numerators: 7 × 12 = 84. Multiply the denominators: 8 × 5 = 40.
- That gives 84/40.
- The greatest number that divides both 84 and 40 is 4.
- Divide the top and bottom by 4: 84 ÷ 4 = 21 and 40 ÷ 4 = 10, so 84/40 = 21/10.
- So (7/8) / (5/12) = 21/10.
Answer: 21/10
Example 2
1 1/6 ÷ 4/5 = ?
- Write 1 1/6 as an improper fraction: 1 × 6 + 1 = 7, so 1 1/6 = 7/6.
- Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second: 4/5 becomes 5/4.
- 7/6 ÷ 4/5 = 7/6 × 5/4.
- Multiply the numerators: 7 × 5 = 35. Multiply the denominators: 6 × 4 = 24.
- That gives 35/24.
- 35/24 is more than 1 whole: 35 ÷ 24 = 1 with 11 left over, so 35/24 = 1 11/24.
- So 1 1/6 ÷ 4/5 = 1 11/24.
Answer: 1 11/24
Example 3
A painter used 2/5 gallon of paint to cover 7/10 of a wall. How many gallons will it take to paint the whole wall?
- Write the story as a number sentence: 2/5 ÷ 7/10.
- Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second: 7/10 becomes 10/7.
- 2/5 ÷ 7/10 = 2/5 × 10/7.
- Multiply the numerators: 2 × 10 = 20. Multiply the denominators: 5 × 7 = 35.
- That gives 20/35.
- The greatest number that divides both 20 and 35 is 5.
- Divide the top and bottom by 5: 20 ÷ 5 = 4 and 35 ÷ 5 = 7, so 20/35 = 4/7.
- So 2/5 ÷ 7/10 = 4/7.
Answer: 4/7
