How to solve Grade 6 decimals problems

Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.

  1. Example 1

    39.2 × 3.84 = ?

    1. Multiply without the decimal points: 392 × 384 = 150528.
    2. Count the decimal places in the factors: 1 + 2 = 3.
    3. Move the decimal point 3 places left: 150.528.
    4. 39.2 × 3.84 = 150.528

    Answer: 150.528

  2. Example 2

    Write 3 7/50 as a decimal.

    1. The whole number 3 stays in front of the decimal point. Change the fraction part, 7/50, to a decimal.
    2. Make the denominator 100: multiply the top and the bottom by 2. 7/50 = 14/100.
    3. 14/100 is 14 hundredths, which is 0.14.
    4. 3 + 0.14 = 3.14, so 3 7/50 = 3.14.

    Answer: 3.14

  3. Example 3

A rope is 13.2 meters long. It is cut into pieces that are each 1.2 meters long. How many pieces are there?

    1. To find how many pieces of 1.2 fit into 13.2, divide: 13.2 ÷ 1.2.
    2. Multiply both numbers by 10 so you divide by a whole number: 13.2 ÷ 1.2 = 132 ÷ 12. 132 ÷ 12: take away 12 × 10 = 120 (12 left), 12 × 1 = 12 (0 left). 10 + 1 = 11, so 132 ÷ 12 = 11.
    3. So the answer is 11 pieces.

    Answer: 11
