How to solve Grade 6 ratios & rates problems

    Simplify the ratio 44:80

    1. Find the greatest common factor of 44 and 80: the biggest number that divides both is 4.
    2. Divide both parts by 4: 44 ÷ 4 = 11 and 80 ÷ 4 = 20.
    3. So 44:80 simplifies to 11:20.

    Answer: 11:20

  2. Example 2

    If 9 items cost $13, what is the unit rate (cost per item)? Round to the nearest cent.

    1. The unit rate is the cost of ONE item, so divide the cost by the number of items: $13 ÷ 9.
    2. 13 ÷ 9 = 1.444…, which rounds to 1.44 (the nearest cent).
    3. So the unit rate is $1.44 per item.

    Answer: $1.44

  3. Example 3

    Solve: 41/28 = x/140

    1. Compare the known denominators: 28 × 5 = 140, so the fraction was scaled up by 5.
    2. Scale the numerator by the same number: 41 × 5 = 205.
    3. Check: 41/28 = 205/140. So x = 205.

    Answer: 205
