If 9 items cost $13, what is the unit rate (cost per item)? Round to the nearest cent.

  1. The unit rate is the cost of ONE item, so divide the cost by the number of items: $13 ÷ 9.
  2. 13 ÷ 9 = 1.444…, which rounds to 1.44 (the nearest cent).
  3. So the unit rate is $1.44 per item.

Answer: $1.44

What is the difference between ratios and fractions?

While they look similar, ratios compare two quantities (3 red to 5 blue = 3:5) while fractions represent parts of a whole (3 out of 8 total = 3/8). A ratio can be part-to-part or part-to-whole, while a fraction is always part-to-whole. Understanding this distinction is crucial for middle school math.

When do kids learn about ratios and proportions?

Ratios are formally introduced in 6th grade and are a major focus of 6th-7th grade math. Proportional reasoning extends through 8th grade and into high school. However, the foundations begin earlier with multiplication, equivalent fractions, and scaling concepts in 3rd-5th grade.
