Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

A rope is 10.5 meters long. It is cut into pieces that are each 1.5 meters long. How many pieces are there?

    1. To find how many pieces of 1.5 fit into 10.5, divide: 10.5 ÷ 1.5.
    2. Multiply both numbers by 10 so you divide by a whole number: 10.5 ÷ 1.5 = 105 ÷ 15. 105 ÷ 15 = 7, because 15 × 7 = 105.
    3. So the answer is 7 pieces.

    Answer: 7

  2. Example 2

Leo and friends paid $61.05 for pizza and split the cost equally among 5 people. How many dollars did each person pay?

    1. The total is shared equally, so divide: 61.05 ÷ 5.
    2. 61.05 is 6105 hundredths. 6105 ÷ 5 = 1221 hundredths, which is 12.21.
    3. So the answer is $12.21.

    Answer: 12.21

  3. Example 3

Kai and friends paid $57.60 for pizza and split the cost equally among 5 people. How many dollars did each person pay?

    1. The total is shared equally, so divide: 57.60 ÷ 5.
    2. 57.60 is 5760 hundredths. 5760 ÷ 5 = 1152 hundredths, which is 11.52.
    3. So the answer is $11.52.

    Answer: 11.52
