How to solve Grade 4 multiplication problems

Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.

  1. Example 1

    239 × 7 = ?

    1. Break apart 239 by place value: 239 = 200 + 30 + 9.
    2. 200 × 7 = 1400
    3. 30 × 7 = 210
    4. 9 × 7 = 63
    5. Add all parts: 1400 + 210 + 63 = 1673

    Answer: 1673

  2. Example 2

A farmer plants 23 rows of corn with 21 plants in each row. How many corn plants are there?

    1. The same amount is repeated (equal groups), so multiply: 23 × 21.
    2. 23 × 21 = 23 × 20 + 23 × 1 = 460 + 23 = 483.
    3. So the answer is 483 corn plants.

    Answer: 483

  3. Example 3

Estimate 209 × 4 by rounding 209 to the nearest hundred. What is your estimate?

    1. Round 209 to the nearest hundred: 209 → 200 (the tens digit is 0, so round down).
    2. Multiply the rounded numbers. 200 × 4: multiply 2 × 4 = 8, then put back the 2 zeros: 800.
    3. So the estimate is about 800.

    Answer: 800
