Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
A box holds 33 crayons. How many crayons are in 38 boxes?
- This is equal groups, so multiply: 38 × 33.
- 38 × 33 = 38 × 30 + 38 × 3 = 1140 + 114 = 1254.
- So the answer is 1254 crayons.
Answer: 1254
Example 2
A farmer plants 23 rows of corn with 21 plants in each row. How many corn plants are there?
- The same amount is repeated (equal groups), so multiply: 23 × 21.
- 23 × 21 = 23 × 20 + 23 × 1 = 460 + 23 = 483.
- So the answer is 483 corn plants.
Answer: 483
Example 3
16 classes go to the school fair. Each class sells 26 tickets. How many tickets do they sell in all?
- The same amount is repeated (equal groups), so multiply: 16 × 26.
- 16 × 26 = 16 × 20 + 16 × 6 = 320 + 96 = 416.
- So the answer is 416 tickets.
Answer: 416
