Worked examples

Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

    ??

    Fill in the missing terms

    1. Find the part that repeats: triangle, heart, star. The pattern says it again and again.
    2. Split the row into groups of 3: (triangle, heart, star) (triangle, heart, star) (triangle, ?, ?).
    3. Fill in the question marks so every group matches (triangle, heart, star): (triangle, ?, ?) becomes (triangle, heart, star).
    4. So the missing shapes are heart, star.

    Answer: heart, star

  2. Example 2

    ??

    Fill in the missing terms

    1. Find the part that repeats: heart, circle, star. The pattern says it again and again.
    2. Split the row into groups of 3: (heart, circle, star) (heart, circle, star) (?, ?, …).
    3. Fill in the question marks so every group matches (heart, circle, star): a new group starts: (heart, circle, …).
    4. So the missing shapes are heart, circle.

    Answer: heart, circle

  3. Example 3

    ??

    Fill in the missing terms

    1. Find the part that repeats: circle, square, triangle. The pattern says it again and again.
    2. Split the row into groups of 3: (circle, square, triangle) (circle, square, triangle) (circle, square, ?) (?, …).
    3. Fill in the question marks so every group matches (circle, square, triangle): (circle, square, ?) becomes (circle, square, triangle); a new group starts: (circle, …).
    4. So the missing shapes are triangle, circle.

    Answer: triangle, circle
