Grade 1 Addition: What is Addition?

Learn what addition means and how to add small numbers

What You'll Learn

  • Understand that addition means putting numbers together
  • Learn the plus (+) and equals (=) signs
  • Add numbers from 0 to 5

📖What Does Addition Mean?

Addition is putting numbers together to find out how many you have in all. When you add, you combine groups of things to get a total.

📖Addition Symbols

The plus sign (+) tells us to add. The equals sign (=) shows the answer. For example: 2 + 3 = 5 means "two plus three equals five."

💡

You can use your fingers to help count! Hold up fingers for each number and count them all together.

📖Adding with Objects

Start by counting real objects. If you have 2 apples and get 1 more apple, count them all: 1, 2, 3. You have 3 apples! 2 + 1 = 3
