Grade 1 Addition: Sums to 15

Add numbers with sums between 11 and 15

What You'll Learn

  • Add numbers to get sums from 11 to 15
  • Use making 10 strategy for teen numbers
  • Understand that 11 = 10 + 1, 12 = 10 + 2, etc.

📖Going Past 10

Now we are adding numbers that give us more than 10! Numbers like 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are called teen numbers.

📖Make a 10 First

For 8 + 5, think: 8 needs 2 more to make 10. Take 2 from the 5, leaving 3. So 8 + 5 = 10 + 3 = 13!

💡

Use your 10-bonds! They make adding past 10 much easier.

⚠️

These problems are harder. Take your time and use the make-a-ten strategy.
