Tally charts help us count and organize information. We make marks to count things!
✏️Reading Tallies
Each line is 1. Every fifth line crosses the other 4 (||||). So |||| means 5, |||| || means 7.

Count the groups of 5 first, then add the extra marks.

Example 1

- Count the tally marks in each row: red 2, blue 3, green 4.
- The greatest number is 4: it is more than 3, 2.
- 4 belongs to green, so green has the most.
Answer: green
Example 2
Favorite colorsItem Tally Total red |||3 blue ||2 green |||3 How many red?
- Find the red row in the “Favorite colors” tally chart.
- Count its tally marks: 3 single marks, so the count is 3.
- So the answer is 3: the red row shows 3.

- Find the sunny days row in the “Favorite weather” tally chart.
- Count its tally marks: 3 single marks, so the count is 3.
