📖Comparing Lengths

We can compare how long things are! One thing can be longer or shorter than another.

✏️Example

A pencil is 6 inches. A crayon is 4 inches. The pencil is LONGER. The crayon is SHORTER.

💡Tip

Look at the numbers! The bigger number means it's longer.

Worked examples

Example 1
The stick is 9 inches. The crayon is 5 inches. Which is longer?
1. Both are measured in inches, so compare the numbers: 9 is more than 5.
2. The stick (9 inches) is longer than the crayon (5 inches).
3. So the longer one is the stick.
Answer: stick
Example 2
The ribbon is 3 inches. The pencil is 7 inches. Which is longer?
1. Both are measured in inches, so compare the numbers: 7 is more than 3.
2. The pencil (7 inches) is longer than the ribbon (3 inches).
3. So the longer one is the pencil.
Answer: pencil
Example 3
The pencil is 7 inches. The string is 4 inches. Which is shorter?
1. Both are measured in inches, so compare the numbers: 7 is more than 4.
2. The pencil (7 inches) is longer than the string (4 inches).
3. So the shorter one is the string.
