Grade 1 Mental Math: Doubles Plus One

Use doubles to solve near-doubles problems

What You'll Learn

  • Recognize near-doubles problems
  • Use doubles facts to solve doubles plus one
  • Add consecutive numbers quickly

📖What is Doubles Plus One?

When two numbers are one apart (like 6 and 7), you can use doubles! Think of the smaller double and add 1.

✏️Example: 6 + 7

Think: 6 + 6 = 12, then add 1 more. 12 + 1 = 13!

💡Tip

You can also think of it as the bigger double minus 1: 7 + 7 = 14, so 6 + 7 = 13.
