   1. Look at the ones place: 0 − 7
   2. 0 is less than 7, so we need to regroup (borrow).
   3. Borrow 1 ten from 9 tens, leaving 8 tens.
   4. 0 becomes 10 ones.
   5. Now subtract the ones: 10 − 7 = 3
   6. Subtract the tens: 8 − 0 = 8
   7. The answer is 83.

3. Example 3

   89 − 4 = ?

   1. Subtract each place value, starting from the ones.
