📖What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside a shape, measured in square units. For a rectangle, multiply width × height. A 5 by 3 rectangle has an area of 5 × 3 = 15 square units.

Example 1
Find the area of a rectangle 11 units by 12 units.
1. Area is the number of unit squares inside the rectangle: 12 rows of 11 squares.
2. Multiply length × width: 11 × 12 = 132.
3. The area is 132 square units.
Answer: 132 square units
Example 2
Find the area of a square with sides of 2 units.
1. All 4 sides of a square are equal, so length × width is side × side.
2. 2 × 2 = 4.
3. The area is 4 square units.
Answer: 4 square units
Example 3
Find the area of a rectangle 9 units by 6 units.
1. Area is the number of unit squares inside the rectangle: 6 rows of 9 squares.
2. Multiply length × width: 9 × 6 = 54.
3. The area is 54 square units.
Answer: 54 square units
