Grade 3 Data & Graphs: Scaled Pictographs
Read pictographs with keys
What You'll Learn
- Use the key: each picture stands for 2, 5 or 10
- Skip count or multiply to find each amount
- Solve how many more, how many fewer and in-all problems
📖Pictographs
Check the key! Each symbol might equal multiple items.
✏️Using the Key
If each ★ = 5 students and a row has 4 ★, count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20. That row shows 20 students.
Worked examples
Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
Favorite Colors blue green purple red Key: = 10 students
How many students chose green?
- Find the green row in the “Favorite Colors” graph.
- The green row has 6 circles. The key says each circle = 10 students, so count by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 (6 × 10 = 60).
- So 60 students chose green.
Answer: 60
Example 2
Favorite Pets fish dogs birds cats Key: = 2 students
How many students chose birds or fish in all?
- The birds row has 6 hearts. The key says each heart = 2 students, so count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 (6 × 2 = 12).
- The fish row has 5 hearts. The key says each heart = 2 students, so count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (5 × 2 = 10).
- Add them: 12 + 10 = 22. So 22 students in all.
Answer: 22
Example 3
Favorite Pets rabbits cats fish birds Key: = 2 students
Which pet did the most students choose?
- Count the circles in each row and multiply by the key (each circle = 2): rabbits 6 × 2 = 12, cats 8 × 2 = 16, fish 3 × 2 = 6, birds 2 × 2 = 4.
- The greatest amount is 16: it is more than 12, 6, 4.
- 16 belongs to cats, so the answer is cats.
Answer: cats
