What You'll Learn

📖The 2s Pattern

All 2s answers are even numbers. 2 × 1 = 2, 2 × 2 = 4, 2 × 3 = 6... The answers go: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

📖The 5s Pattern

All 5s answers end in 0 or 5. 5 × 1 = 5, 5 × 2 = 10, 5 × 3 = 15... The answers go: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.

For 5s, think of counting nickels! Each nickel is worth 5 cents.

📖Commutative Property

Order does not matter in multiplication! 3 × 5 = 5 × 3 = 15. This is called the commutative property.

  1. Example 1

    2 × 2 = ?

    1. Think of 2 groups of 2.
    2. 2 × 2 = 2 + 2
    3. Skip count by 2: 2, 4
    4. The 2nd number is 4.
    5. 2s trick: Just double the number!

    Answer: 4

  2. Example 2

    5 × 3 = ?

    1. Think of 5 groups of 3.
    2. 5 × 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3
    3. Skip count by 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15
    4. The 5th number is 15.

    Answer: 15

  3. Example 3

    5 × 7 = ?

    1. Think of 5 groups of 7.
    2. 5 × 7 = 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7
    3. Skip count by 7: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35
    4. The 5th number is 35.
    5. 5s trick: 7 × 5 = half of 7 × 10 = half of 70 = 35

    Answer: 35
