Example 1
Ben had $5.00. Ben spent $1.35 on a puzzle. How many dollars does Ben have left?
- Start with the first amount and take away what was used, so subtract to find what is left.
- Line up the decimal points: 5.00 − 1.35. Think in hundredths: 500 − 135 = 365 hundredths, which is 3.65.
- So the answer is $3.65.
Answer: 3.65
Example 2
Which digit is in the hundredths place of 1.54?
- Right after the decimal point come the tenths, then the hundredths, then the thousandths.
- In 1.54, the digits after the point are 5, 4. The hundredths digit is the second one.
- So the digit in the hundredths place of 1.54 is 4.
Answer: 4
