Worked examples
Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
513 ÷ 7 = ?
- Use the partial quotients method.
- How many 7s can you subtract from 513?
- 7 × 50 = 350
- 7 × 20 = 140
- 7 × 2 = 14
- 7 × 1 = 7
- Add the quotients: 50 + 20 + 2 + 1 = 73
- Remainder: 2
- 513 ÷ 7 = 73 R2
Answer: 73 R2
Example 2
713 ÷ 6 = ?
- Use the partial quotients method.
- How many 6s can you subtract from 713?
- 6 × 100 = 600
- 6 × 10 = 60
- 6 × 5 = 30
- 6 × 2 = 12
- 6 × 1 = 6
- Add the quotients: 100 + 10 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 118
- Remainder: 5
- 713 ÷ 6 = 118 R5
Answer: 118 R5
