Worked examples

Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

    3 × 1/2 = ?

    1. 3 × 1/2 means 3 groups of 1/2.
    2. Multiply the whole number by the numerator: 3 × 1 = 3. The denominator stays 2.
    3. So 3 × 1/2 = 3/2.

    Answer: 3/2

  2. Example 2

    Write 0.94 as a fraction

    1. 0.94 has two digits after the decimal point, so it counts hundredths.
    2. 0.94 is 94 hundredths: the numerator is 94 and the denominator is 100.
    3. So 0.94 = 94/100.

    Answer: 94/100

  3. Example 3

    1/8 + 2/8 = ?

    1. The denominators are the same (8), so the pieces are the same size.
    2. Add the numerators and keep the denominator: 1 + 2 = 3, so the sum is 3/8.
    3. So 1/8 + 2/8 = 3/8.

    Answer: 3/8
