Worked examples

Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

Find the perimeter of a square with sides of 26 units.

    1. Perimeter is the distance all the way around. A square has 4 equal sides of 26 units.
    2. 26 + 26 + 26 + 26 = 4 × 26 = 104.
    3. The perimeter is 104 units.

    Answer: 104 units

  2. Example 2

A rectangle has a perimeter of 60 meters. Its length is 22 meters. What is its width in meters?

    1. The perimeter is 2 lengths + 2 widths, so one length + one width is half of it: 60 ÷ 2 = 30.
    2. Take away the length: 30 − 22 = 8.
    3. Check: 2 × (22 + 8) = 60. The width is 8 meters.

    Answer: 8

  3. Example 3

A rectangular poster is 30 inches long and 28 inches wide. What is its perimeter in inches?

    1. Perimeter is the distance around: two lengths and two widths.
    2. Add one length and one width: 30 + 28 = 58.
    3. Double it for all 4 sides: 2 × 58 = 116.
    4. The perimeter of the poster is 116 inches.

    Answer: 116
