Example 1
425 ÷ 25 = ?
- Start with 42, the first part of 425 that is at least 25.
- 42 ÷ 25: 25 × 1 = 25 (25 × 2 = 50 is too big). Write 1. 42 − 25 = 17. Bring down the 5 to make 175.
- 175 ÷ 25: 25 × 7 = 175 (25 × 8 = 200 is too big). Write 7. 175 − 175 = 0.
- 425 ÷ 25 = 17
- Check: 17 × 25 = 425
Answer: 17
Example 2
196 ÷ 49 = ?
- Start with 196, the first part of 196 that is at least 49.
- 196 ÷ 49: 49 × 4 = 196 (49 × 5 = 245 is too big). Write 4. 196 − 196 = 0.
- 196 ÷ 49 = 4
- Check: 4 × 49 = 196
Answer: 4
Example 3

- 329 ÷ 47: 47 × 7 = 329 (47 × 8 = 376 is too big). Write 7. 329 − 329 = 0.
- 329 ÷ 47 = 7
- Check: 7 × 47 = 329
Answer: 7
