  1. Example 1

    9828 ÷ 88 = ?

    1. Start with 98, the first part of 9828 that is at least 88.
    2. 98 ÷ 88: 88 × 1 = 88 (88 × 2 = 176 is too big). Write 1. 98 − 88 = 10. Bring down the 2 to make 102.
    3. 102 ÷ 88: 88 × 1 = 88 (88 × 2 = 176 is too big). Write 1. 102 − 88 = 14. Bring down the 8 to make 148.
    4. 148 ÷ 88: 88 × 1 = 88 (88 × 2 = 176 is too big). Write 1. 148 − 88 = 60.
    5. 9828 ÷ 88 = 111 R60
    6. Check: 111 × 88 + 60 = 9828

    Answer: 111 R60

  2. Example 2

    6692 ÷ 30 = ?

    1. Start with 66, the first part of 6692 that is at least 30.
    2. 66 ÷ 30: 30 × 2 = 60 (30 × 3 = 90 is too big). Write 2. 66 − 60 = 6. Bring down the 9 to make 69.
    3. 69 ÷ 30: 30 × 2 = 60 (30 × 3 = 90 is too big). Write 2. 69 − 60 = 9. Bring down the 2 to make 92.
    4. 92 ÷ 30: 30 × 3 = 90 (30 × 4 = 120 is too big). Write 3. 92 − 90 = 2.
    5. 6692 ÷ 30 = 223 R2
    6. Check: 223 × 30 + 2 = 6692

    Answer: 223 R2

  3. Example 3

    8711 ÷ 24 = ?

    1. Start with 87, the first part of 8711 that is at least 24.
    2. 87 ÷ 24: 24 × 3 = 72 (24 × 4 = 96 is too big). Write 3. 87 − 72 = 15. Bring down the 1 to make 151.
    3. 151 ÷ 24: 24 × 6 = 144 (24 × 7 = 168 is too big). Write 6. 151 − 144 = 7. Bring down the 1 to make 71.
    4. 71 ÷ 24: 24 × 2 = 48 (24 × 3 = 72 is too big). Write 2. 71 − 48 = 23.
    5. 8711 ÷ 24 = 362 R23
    6. Check: 362 × 24 + 23 = 8711

    Answer: 362 R23
