1. Example 1

   (−7) + 14 = ?

   1. The signs are different: subtract 14 − 7 = 7 and keep the sign of 14, the number farther from zero.
   2. (−7) + 14 = 7

   Answer: 7

2. Example 2

   (−11) + (−10) = ?

   1. Both numbers have the same sign: add 11 + 10 = 21 and keep the sign.
   2. (−11) + (−10) = −21

   Answer: −21

3. Example 3

   7 + (−10) = ?

   1. The signs are different: subtract 10 − 7 = 3 and keep the sign of (−10), the number farther from zero.
   2. 7 + (−10) = −3

   Answer: −3
