Subtraction with Multiple Regroupings
Handle complex subtraction requiring regrouping across several place values
What You'll Learn
- Regroup across multiple consecutive place values
- Handle zeros requiring chain regrouping
- Develop mental math shortcuts
📖Chain Regrouping
When you need to borrow but the next column has a 0 (or a digit you already borrowed from), you must chain your regrouping. For 7,003 - 2,456: borrow from thousands to hundreds, then from hundreds to tens, then from tens to ones.
💡
A useful shortcut: 7,003 - 2,456 = 7,003 - 2,456 + 3 - 3 = 7,006 - 2,459 = 4,547. Sometimes adjusting both numbers makes the regrouping easier!
