Estimate irrational numbers
What You'll Learn
- Estimate square roots
- Round to decimal places
πApproximating
Find between which integers!
Worked examples
Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
β87 is between two consecutive whole numbers. What is the smaller one?
- Find the perfect squares on each side of 87: 9Β² = 81 and 10Β² = 100.
- 81 < 87 < 100, so 9 < β87 < 10.
- The smaller one is 9.
Answer: 9
Example 2
Estimate β106 to the nearest whole number.
- 10Β² = 100 and 11Β² = 121, so β106 is between 10 and 11.
- Halfway between them is 10.5, and 10.5Β² = 110.25. 106 is less than 110.25, so β106 is closer to 10.
- So β106 β 10 to the nearest whole number.
Answer: 10
Example 3
Estimate β83 to the nearest tenth.
- 9Β² = 81 and 10Β² = 100, so β83 is between 9 and 10.
- Try tenths: 9.1Β² = 82.81 and 9.2Β² = 84.64, so β83 is between 9.1 and 9.2.
- Halfway is 9.15, and 9.15Β² = 83.7225. 83 is less than 83.7225, so β83 is closer to 9.1.
- So β83 β 9.1 to the nearest tenth.
Answer: 9.1
