Worked examples
Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
Solve: 7x β 8 = 4x β 29
- Subtract 4x from both sides: 3x β 8 = β29.
- Add 8 to both sides: 3x = β29 + 8 = β21.
- Divide both sides by 3: x = β21 Γ· 3 = β7.
- Check: 7 Γ (β7) β 8 = β57 and 4 Γ (β7) β 29 = β57 β So x = β7.
Answer: β7
Example 2
Solve: 3(x + 4) = 2x + 14
- Distribute the 3: 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12, so 3x + 12 = 2x + 14.
- Subtract 2x from both sides: x + 12 = 14.
- Subtract 12 from both sides: x = 14 β 12 = 2.
- Check: 3 Γ (2 + 4) = 18 and 2 Γ 2 + 14 = 18 β So x = 2.
Answer: 2
Example 3
Solve: 5(x β 4) = 3(x β 4)
- On the left: Distribute the 5: 5(x β 4) = 5x β 20.
- On the right: Distribute the 3: 3(x β 4) = 3x β 12, so 5x β 20 = 3x β 12.
- Subtract 3x from both sides: 2x β 20 = β12.
- Add 20 to both sides: 2x = β12 + 20 = 8.
- Divide both sides by 2: x = 8 Γ· 2 = 4.
- Check: 5 Γ (4 β 4) = 0 and 3 Γ (4 β 4) = 0 β So x = 4.
Answer: 4
