Grade 1 Number Bonds: Fact Families
See how related bonds form fact families
What You'll Learn
- Understand that bonds create related addition/subtraction facts
- Write all 4 facts from one bond (2 additions, 2 subtractions)
- See the commutative property in action
📖Families of Facts
One number bond gives you a whole family of facts! If 7 = 3 + 4, then you also know: 7 = 4 + 3, 7 - 3 = 4, and 7 - 4 = 3. Four facts from one bond!
💡
When you learn one bond, you are learning four facts at once. This makes learning math facts much faster!
Worked examples
Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.
Example 1
? + 3 = 8
- A number bond joins two parts to make a whole. The whole is 8 and one part is 3.
- To find the missing part, take the known part away from the whole: 8 − 3.
- So the missing part is 5.
Answer: 5
Example 2
7 + ? = 12
- A number bond joins two parts to make a whole. The whole is 12 and one part is 7.
- To find the missing part, take the known part away from the whole: 12 − 7.
- So the missing part is 5.
Answer: 5
Example 3
9 + 6 = ?
- A number bond joins two parts to make a whole. Here the two parts are 9 and 6.
- To find the whole, put the parts together: 9 + 6.
- So the whole is 15.
Answer: 15
