1. Example 1

   17 + 63 = ?

   1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
   2. 17 = 10 + 7
   3. 63 = 60 + 3
   4. Add the tens: 10 + 60 = 70
   5. Add the ones: 7 + 3 = 10
   6. 10 ones = 1 ten and 0 ones (regrouping)
   7. Combine: 70 + 10 = 80

   Answer: 80

2. Example 2

   69 + 28 = ?

   1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
   2. 69 = 60 + 9
   3. 28 = 20 + 8
   4. Add the tens: 60 + 20 = 80
   5. Add the ones: 9 + 8 = 17
   6. 17 ones = 1 ten and 7 ones (regrouping)
   7. Combine: 80 + 17 = 97

   Answer: 97

3. Example 3

   32 + 39 = ?

   1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
   2. 32 = 30 + 2
   3. 39 = 30 + 9
   4. Add the tens: 30 + 30 = 60
   5. Add the ones: 2 + 9 = 11
   6. 11 ones = 1 ten and 1 ones (regrouping)
   7. Combine: 60 + 11 = 71

   Answer: 71
