📖Regrouping (Carrying)

When the ones add up to 10 or more, we regroup. 47 + 28: 7 + 8 = 15, so we write 5 and carry 1 to the tens. 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. The answer is 75.

Remember to add the carried digit to the tens column!

Example 1
18 + 77 = ?
1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
2. 18 = 10 + 8
3. 77 = 70 + 7
4. Add the tens: 10 + 70 = 80
5. Add the ones: 8 + 7 = 15
6. 15 ones = 1 ten and 5 ones (regrouping)
7. Combine: 80 + 15 = 95
Answer: 95
Example 2
27 + 33 = ?
1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
2. 27 = 20 + 7
3. 33 = 30 + 3
4. Add the tens: 20 + 30 = 50
5. Add the ones: 7 + 3 = 10
6. 10 ones = 1 ten and 0 ones (regrouping)
7. Combine: 50 + 10 = 60
Answer: 60
Example 3
57 + 96 = ?
1. Break apart both numbers by place value.
2. 57 = 50 + 7
3. 96 = 90 + 6
4. Add the tens: 50 + 90 = 140
5. Add the ones: 7 + 6 = 13
6. 13 ones = 1 ten and 3 ones (regrouping)
7. Combine: 140 + 13 = 153
Answer: 153
