1. Example 1

   Write 3 1/4 as an improper fraction

   1. Each whole is 4/4, so 3 wholes are 3 × 4 = 12 parts: 12/4.
   2. Add the 1 more: 12 + 1 = 13, so the numerator is 13 and the denominator stays 4.
   3. So 3 1/4 = 13/4.

   Answer: 13/4

2. Example 2

   Write 24/5 as a mixed number

   1. How many wholes are in 24/5? Each whole is 5/5, so divide: 24 ÷ 5 = 4 with 4 left over.
   2. 4 wholes use 4 × 5 = 20 parts, and 24 − 20 = 4 parts are left: 4/5.
   3. So 24/5 = 4 4/5.

   Answer: 4 4/5

3. Example 3

   Write 6 1/2 as an improper fraction

   1. Each whole is 2/2, so 6 wholes are 6 × 2 = 12 parts: 12/2.
   2. Add the 1 more: 12 + 1 = 13, so the numerator is 13 and the denominator stays 2.
   3. So 6 1/2 = 13/2.

   Answer: 13/2
