Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

    4 6/8 + 1 1/8 = ?

    1. Add the fraction parts: 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8.
    2. Add the whole numbers: 4 + 1 = 5.
    3. Put them together: 5 7/8.
    4. So 4 6/8 + 1 1/8 = 5 7/8.

    Answer: 5 7/8

  2. Example 2

    1. Subtract the fraction parts: 3/12 − 2/12 = 1/12.
    2. Subtract the whole numbers: 4 − 1 = 3.
    3. Put them together: 3 1/12.
    4. So 4 3/12 − 1 2/12 = 3 1/12.

    Answer: 3 1/12

  3. Example 3

    2 2/3 + 3 2/3 = ?

    1. Add the fraction parts: 2/3 + 2/3 = 4/3.
    2. Add the whole numbers: 2 + 3 = 5.
    3. 4/3 is more than 1 whole: 4/3 = 1 and 1/3. Regroup the 1 whole: 5 + 1 = 6.
    4. Put them together: 6 1/3.
    5. So 2 2/3 + 3 2/3 = 6 1/3.
