Worked examples

Real problems from the practice worksheets, solved one step at a time.

  1. Example 1

    Car Age and Value
    0510152025246810Age of car (years)Value ($ thousands)

    x = Age of car (years) Β· y = Value ($ thousands)

    Data: Age of car (years) (x) and Value ($ thousands) (y)
    x2345
    y23211816
    x6789
    y13962

    The line of best fit passes through (3, 21) and (8, 6). What is the y-intercept of the line?

    1. Slope = change in y Γ· change in x (rise over run), using the two points on the line.
    2. Change in y: 6 βˆ’ 21 = βˆ’15. Change in x: 8 βˆ’ 3 = 5.
    3. Slope = βˆ’15 Γ· 5 = βˆ’3.
    4. Use b = y βˆ’ mΒ·x with the point (3, 21): b = 21 βˆ’ (βˆ’3) Γ— 3 = 21 βˆ’ (βˆ’9) = 30.
    5. So the y-intercept is 30 (the line crosses the y-axis at (0, 30)).

    Answer: 30

  2. Example 2

    T-Shirt Price and Sales
    506070809010152025Price ($)Shirts sold

    x = Price ($) Β· y = Shirts sold

    Data: Price ($) (x) and Shirts sold (y)
    x10121416
    y82787066
    x18202224
    y62585854

    The line of best fit passes through (12, 76) and (22, 56). What is the slope of the line?

    1. Slope = change in y Γ· change in x (rise over run), using the two points on the line.
    2. Change in y: 56 βˆ’ 76 = βˆ’20. Change in x: 22 βˆ’ 12 = 10.
    3. Slope = βˆ’20 Γ· 10 = βˆ’2.
    4. So the slope is βˆ’2.

    Answer: βˆ’2

  3. Example 3

    Temperature and Ice Cream Sales
    10015020025060708090100Temperature (Β°F)Cones sold

    x = Temperature (Β°F) Β· y = Cones sold

    Data: Temperature (Β°F) (x) and Cones sold (y)
    x64687276
    y125135157167
    x80848892
    y183205215237

    The line of best fit is y = 4x βˆ’ 134. Is the point (80, 183) above or below the line?

    1. Find the line's y-value at x = 80: y = 4 Γ— 80 βˆ’ 134 = 320 βˆ’ 134 = 186.
    2. The point's y-value is 183, which is less than 186.
    3. So the point (80, 183) is below the line.

    Answer: below
