How to solve Grade 7 probability problems
Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.
Example 1
A spinner has 4 equal sections: 1 green and 3 yellow. You spin it once. What is the probability of landing on green?
- Total outcomes: count everything that could happen, 1 + 3 = 4.
- Favorable outcomes: the 1 green.
- Probability = favorable ÷ total = 1/4.
- So the probability is 1/4.
Answer: 1/4
Example 2
A number cube was rolled 60 times and landed on 5 a total of 13 times. The theoretical probability of rolling a 5 is 1/6. How much greater is the experimental probability than the theoretical probability?
- Experimental probability: 5 came up 13 times out of 60, so 13/60.
- Theoretical probability: 1/6 = 10/60 — in 60 trials you would expect 5 about 10 times.
- Subtract: 13/60 − 10/60 = 3/60, which simplifies to 1/20. The experimental probability is that much greater.
Answer: 1/20
Example 3
A spinner was spun 60 times. Results — blue: 23, red: 10 and green: 27. What is the experimental probability of landing on green?
- Experimental probability = number of times it happened ÷ total trials (60).
- Green came up 27 times.
- So the experimental probability is 27/60, which simplifies to 9/20.
Answer: 9/20
