How to solve Grade 7 statistics problems
Real problems from these worksheets, solved one step at a time — the same explanations your child sees when practicing online.
Example 1
Five random samples of 10 students each were taken from the 100 students at a school. The number in each sample who walk to school: 3, 2, 4, 6, 5. Use the mean of the samples to estimate how many of the 100 students walk to school.
- Find the mean of the samples: (3 + 2 + 4 + 6 + 5) ÷ 5 = 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
- So a typical sample of 10 has 4 who walk to school. Each sample of 10 stands for 100 ÷ 10 = 10 times as many students.
- 4 × 10 = 40, so about 40 of the 100 students walk to school.
Answer: 40
Example 2
A random sample of 10 of the 500 families in a town reported miles driven to work each day: 52, 15, 56, 29, 41, 40, 54, 42, 27, 29. Predict how many of all 500 drive more than 30 miles.
- In the sample, the values more than 30 are 52, 56, 41, 40, 54, 42 — 6 of the 10.
- The sample is random, so about 6/10 of all 500 do too. Each one in the sample stands for 500 ÷ 10 = 50.
- 6 × 50 = 300, so about 300 of the 500 drive more than 30 miles.
Answer: 300
Example 3
Find the mean of: 2, 7, 12, 13, 18, 19, 23
- Add all the numbers: 2 + 7 + 12 + 13 + 18 + 19 + 23 = 94.
- There are 7 numbers, so divide the total by 7: 94 ÷ 7 = 13.428…
- Rounded to the nearest hundredth, the mean is 13.43.
Answer: 13.43
